It’s getting to be that time of year again, when the year-end holidays and the Northern Hemisphere’s official start of winter are rushing at us, travel plans are hatching, and gift wrap is unfurling to turn seasonal purchases into surprises for beloved friends and family members.
Here at LOAC, we decided to mark the holidays with a mattering of newspaper comic strips from the last six decades of the 20th Century in a string of postings released every few days. We begin with this half-dozen strips from 1944, eight decades ago. As you can see, active fighting in World War II still has plenty of American soldiers “over there,” continuing the Allied pushes that will result in 1945’s V-E and V-J Days, and the comics mix that realization into their holiday messages. Not all series embraced the battlefronts, of course, as Li’l Abner (and, this year, Mickey Finn) prove.

What do holiday strips from seventy years ago look like? Join us back in this space by December 10th, when we unveil our selections from 1954 …
